The Ideas Box Arrives in the South Bronx

IDB Bronx

From July 15th – September 5th, LWB and its local partners will run an Ideas Box summer program at Hayden Lord Park in The Bronx, NY.

Libraries Without Borders (LWB) has partnered with arts-education non-profit DreamYard and The New York Public Library to open a portable digital media and media center in the South Bronx neighborhood of New York. The program will be based at Hayden Lord Park (1675 Andrews Avenue South, Bronx) in the South Bronx's Community District 5, an under-served community in New York City with over 60% of residents on federal income assistance.

From July 15th through September 5th, the Ideas Box will be open from 1PM to 6PM on Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through partnerships with local, national, and international organizations, the Ideas Box will serve as a public space for individuals and families in the neighborhood to participate in workshops ranging from documentary filmmaking, to computer programming and graphic design. For example, our team will be leading students through documentary filmmaking workshops, using video cameras from the Ideas Box to record footage of activities in the park, then using computers and tablets pre-installed with video editing software in the Ideas Box to edit the footage, and using the internet provided by the Ideas Box to upload and share these videos.

In partnership with local middle schools, LWB has conducted outreach to youth from the neighborhood. All members of the community are welcome to join us for creative and educational programming.

Through the duration of the project, LWB will be coordinating a fundraising campaign through Indiegogo to "Keep the Ideas Box in The Bronx." If the necessary funds are successfully raised to cover the cost of the Ideas Box construction and contents, LWB will transfer ownership of the Ideas Box to our local partner, DreamYard.

On July 15th, LWB and its partners will hold an opening ceremony for the Ideas Box program at Hayden Lord Park from 11am – 1pm. Speakers will include Alexander Soros, the NYC Public Advocate Tish James, the President of The New York Public Library Anthony Marx, the co-founder of DreamYard Tim Lord, and the president of LWB Patrick Weil. We'll also have a special book reading hosted by local author Charlie Vasquez.

We welcome you to join us at Hayden Lord Park anytime this summer to use the Ideas Box resources and meet the LWB team.
